Work Experience Review 2017

I am pleased to report that the Work Experience fortnight that took place for Year 10 this year (15 - 26 May 2017) was probably the most successful for some time.

It was particularly encouraging that having been unable to use, as in previous years, the Castle Bromwich Church for up to 15 students undertaking construction projects this year, the school and students were able to find alternative placements.

Every student had initial placements for 2 weeks and whilst some (inevitably) did not work out, the vast majority were very successful from both the employer and students perspectives.

The “dropouts/failure to complete” for a variety of reasons were the lowest ever recorded, and provisions were again put in place for this handful of students to attend school and work through life/work skills exercises.

The Academy made the positive decision a few years ago to not allow students to undertake “in school” work-experience. This is to encourage students to find their own placements and have a more realistic experience of employment.

A small selection of feedback notes/reports (typical of so many) have been summarised by Nick Cheese (school CEIAG Co-ordinator) showing evidence from local employers, visiting Greenwood staff, and most importantly the students themselves, of the tremendous positive impact resulting from the work experience offered to our Year 10’s.

It is already noticeable that post work experience several of our students are now attending school with a more positive and mature attitude toward work ethics such as attendance and timekeeping. Several students have already been offered vacation jobs or volunteering opportunities as a result.

Fewer and fewer schools are giving their students this opportunity partly because of the time and funding it requires, but we at Greenwood Academy continue to regard work experience as playing a pivotal role within our school’s CEIAG strategy, and we have already earmarked to repeat next year (14-25 May 2018).

In summary, Work Experience undoubtedly helps to prepare our students for life after leaving school, into further education/training and in preparation for the world of work into ultimate employment. It is certainly a pivotal plank in Greenwood Academy’s strategy going forward to continue to prevent them becoming “NEETS” and help our students become better prepared for life after secondary school, and to become positive, productive and outstanding citizens.
