03 December 2015

Dear Parents / Carers

Energy Drinks, Isotonic Drinks and Fizzy Drinks (Cans & Bottles)
In response to NHS advice the academy has taken the decision to ban the consumption of Energy Drinks, Isotonic Drinks and Fizzy Drinks (Cans & Bottles) during the school day.

Please note that from Monday 7th December any drinks of this kind found on the academy site during the school day will be confiscated and disposed of.

This action has not been taken lightly but has been taken in direct response to an unfortunate increase in the number of students who are attending the academy with bottles of ‘energy drinks’ and bottles of ‘fizzy pop’, some of which contain over 100 grams of sugar.

NHS research tells us that the sugar in these drinks is producing a short-term energy boost and then very quickly lowering mood. The impact is an increase in lethargy throughout the day and a reduction in concentration and productivity as well as causing a risk of long-term damage to health.
Students are welcome to consume water in lessons and unstructured times and are able to replenish water bottles between lesson changeovers.
The academy offers a ‘FREE’ breakfast to all pupils between the hours of 8.00am and 8.30am every morning; students can eat fresh toast and a warm drink that can be consumed in the sandwich bar area before the school day begins.
This action is being taken alongside a widening of our healthy eating curriculum to help support student’s understanding of the consequences of a poor diet and encourage better dietary habits.
Your support in this very serious matter is appreciated,
Yours Sincerely,

Harry French
