Fire at Astral 6th Form Centre

Dear Parents / Carers,

I have no doubt that you will have heard about the deplorable arson attack on a vehicle in the Astral 6th Form Centre Car Park that spread into the lower ground floor of the building on the evening of Thursday 20th November. I am extremely thankful that nobody was hurt or killed.

The attack has for the time being rendered the building unusable, the clean-up operation is underway and we hope to be operational again in the coming days.

Most distressing has been the total devastation of the offices and areas used by KickStart including a play room used by Pre-School children. All of the equipment, seating and play areas used by the youngsters has been ruined.

The academy 6th Form has temporarily been re-homed within the main academy building reducing the impact on our 6th Form students as far as possible. The Academy is of course providing an alternative venue for KickStart while the clean-up operation takes place as well as supporting the numerous other groups who regularly use the Astral Centre.

Our students are disgusted by the attack and want to find ways of supporting the young people affected by the fire. Our students wish to appeal to yourselves and the wider Castle Vale community to try and replace the damaged toys and raise some money so that the valuable service provided by KickStart can be re-instated as well as to help replace some of the losses suffered by other groups.

Please support our appeal in any of the following ways:

1) Students will be offered the opportunity to take part in a ‘non uniform’ day this Friday 28th November. All of our students are encouraged to attend school in casual clothes and if students are willing make a small donation of 50p it would be appreciated although of course this is not compulsory.

2) If you have any toys or children’s equipment that you are willing to donate to KickStart they would be very much appreciated and extremely welcome. A collection point has been created in the Academy reception.

3) All of the proceeds from our Grease Performance on Thursday 27th November will be donated to the appeal and any funds raised through this appeal will be matched by Jaguar Land Rover who have already pledged £1000 to support the clean-up operation and are providing labour to get the play areas up and running as soon as possible.

We will not allow this kind of reckless act to disrupt the progress of our young people. We hope that you will join us in our appeal to once again provide a clean, safe and well stocked play area for the children of Castle Vale.

Yours Sincerely,

Harry French
Principal
